Whitefish Wolverines survives Butte Cobras comeback, wins 4-3

Whitefish Wolverines survived a determined comeback attempt by Butte Cobras on the way to a 4-3 win.

Whitefish Wolverines made the score 4-0 on a goal by Ian Wiens at 10:16 in the second period, and Butte Cobras got as close as 4-3 when Anton Zimmer scored 7:11 into the third period.

The win by Whitefish Wolverines clinched the best of three series at 2-1.

Chris Cutshall was all over the ice for Whitefish Wolverines, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Cutshall scored the first of his two goals short handed at 2:28 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Whitefish Wolverines. A tripping call on Kristian Evans put Whitefish Wolverines on the penalty kill. Cutshall's next tally short handed made the score 3-0 Whitefish Wolverines with 10:29 left in the second period. Richard Mulligan provided the assist.

Whitefish Wolverines put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Butte Cobras to score on any of its six power plays. Whitefish Wolverines forced Butte Cobras goalie Tage Rustgi to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

Brett Fernandez also scored for Whitefish Wolverines. In addition, Whitefish Wolverines received assists from Kieffer Helbing, Nathan Luznar-Purdy, and Aleksei Garin, who contributed one each.

Butte Cobras excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Butte Cobras kept Whitefish Wolverines' goalie busy throughout the game, and Brendan Schultz made 33 saves on 36 shots.

Butte Cobras was helped by Nikita Polishchuk, who finished with one goal. Polishchuk scored 6:33 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Whitefish Wolverines. Dzmitry Daniliuk picked up the assist. More assists for Butte Cobras came via Jacob Rudloff, who had two and Bogdan Shleev, Derick Brehm, and Brock Solomon, who each chipped in one.

Whitefish Wolverines incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors. Rustgi recorded 35 saves for Butte Cobras. Butte Cobras incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
