Huge game by Bonta boosts Helena over Gillette, 4-1

A stellar performance between the pipes by Grant Martens helped the Helena Bighorns defeat the Gillette Wild, 4-1.

After the loss made the series score 1-0 in the best of three series, Gillette faces elimination next time out.

Helena got the win behind a great game by Johnny Bonta, who had one goal and two assists. Bonta scored on the power play 16:47 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Bighorns had taken the advantage when the Wild's Brandon Beard got sent off for roughing. Nick Trefry picked up the assist.

Helena's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Gillette power plays. The Bighorns' offense rang up 35 shots on Gillette's net.

Helena also got points from Trefry, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Helena also had goals scored by Cody Vanthournout and Matt Mohar, who scored one goal each. In addition, Helena received assists from Brian Skillicorn, who had one and Brandt Miller, who had three.

The Wild forced Helena goalie Martens to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. Gillette struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Bighorns to score three power play goals on four chances.

The Wild were led by Trevor Ruiz, who scored the team's only goal. Ruiz scored 14:24 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Gillette. Dalton McCann provided the assist.

Martens rejected 42 shots on goal for Helena. The Bighorns incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Alex Feese recorded 31 saves for Gillette. The Wild incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
