Norwich blows out New Hamburg, 5-2

The Norwich Merchants had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-2 win over the New Hamburg Firebirds.

The win by Norwich clinched the best of seven series at 4-3.

Jamie Kelly was all over the ice for the Merchants, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Kelly scored the first of his two goals at 14:40 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Norwich. Kelly's next tally made the score 5-2 Norwich with 3:24 left in the third period. Mitchell Berzins provided the assist.

Norwich put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow New Hamburg to score on any of its four power plays.

Norwich also got a goal from Braeden Shand as well. More assists for Norwich came via Kurtis Lavis, Jesse Szabo, and Harlen Vanwynsberghe, who each chipped in one.

The Firebirds were helped by Kory Nowak, who had one goal. Nowak scored 17:46 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Norwich. Brandon Quan picked up the assist. Tyler Randerson also scored for New Hamburg. In addition, New Hamburg received assists from Ben Playfair and Carter Tracey, who contributed one each.

Jesse Schoeman rejected 26 shots on goal for the Merchants. Norwich incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Ryan Purcell recorded 17 saves for New Hamburg. The Firebirds ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. New Hamburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jay Fried was ejected from the game.
