New Hamburg falls to Norwich in overtime, 4-3 (OT)

Mitchell Berzins gave the Norwich Merchants a 4-3 (OT) victory over the New Hamburg Firebirds when he scored 2:57 into the extra period.

With the win, Norwich avoided elimination to make the series score 3-3 in the best of seven series.

Although the Merchants was up by as many as two goals in the second period, New Hamburg kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Firebirds got to within 3-2 on a goal by Quinten Haddock at 6:31 in the third period.

Norwich got the win thanks to a great game by Berzins, who had two goals and one assist. Berzins scored the first of his two goals at 1:00 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Norwich. Braeden Shand provided the assist. Berzins' next tally made the score 4-3 Norwich with 17:03 left in overtime. The Merchants had gotten the advantage when New Hamburg's Garrett Pollock was sent off for slashing. Kurtis Lavis picked up the assist.

Norwich put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Firebirds to score on any of their seven power plays. The Merchants' offense rang up 43 shots on New Hamburg's net.

Norwich additionally got points from Shand, who also registered one goal and one assist. Drake Morrell also scored for Norwich. More assists for Norwich came via Jamie Kelly, Jesse Szabo, and Troy Lamoure, who contributed one each.

The Firebirds were led by Carter Tracey, who racked up one goal and one assist. Tracey scored 8:23 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Tyler Randerson provided the assist. New Hamburg also got a goal from Kory Nowak as well. In addition, New Hamburg received assists from Colin Martin, Brandon Quan, and Jerry Ennett, who each chipped in one.

Jesse Schoeman made 21 saves for Norwich on 24 shots. The Merchants incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with five minors. New Hamburg's Ryan Purcell stopped 39 shots out of the 43 that he faced. The Firebirds incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
