New Hamburg survives Tavistock comeback, wins 5-4

The Tavistock Braves almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but the New Hamburg Firebirds managed to pull out a 5-4 win in the end.

New Hamburg led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Firebirds' David Jennings scored on the power play at 11:55 in the second period to put New Hamburg up 3-0.

The win by the Firebirds clinched the best of seven series at 4-1.

In the losing effort, Tavistock was led by Derek Cowing, who grabbed two goals. Cowing scored the first of his two goals at 17:45 into the second period to make the score 3-1 New Hamburg. Dylan Yantzi picked up the assist. Cowing's next tally made the score 3-2 New Hamburg with one second1 seconds left in the second period. The Braves had gained a power play chance when Taylor Wood was whistled for holding. Jared Yantzi provided the assist.

In the losing effort, Tavistock was paced by Cowing, who tallied two goals.

New Hamburg's offense rang up 48 shots on the Braves' net. The Firebirds had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

New Hamburg was led by Colin Martin, who registered one goal and one assist. Martin scored 10:31 into the third period to make the score 5-4 New Hamburg. New Hamburg also got points from Jennings, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for New Hamburg included Shawn Antonides, Andrew Boer, and Tyler Hoffman, who each put in one. In addition, New Hamburg received assists from Jay Fried, Tyler Randerson, Jerry Ennett, Chris Eckert, and Carter Tracey, who contributed one each.

Tavistock forced the Firebirds goalie Ryan Purcell to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots.

Tavistock additionally got points from Matthew Lupton, who also had one goal and one assist. Tavistock also got a goal from Tayler Trachsel as well. More assists for Tavistock came via Jordan Ritsma, Will Kilgour, and Maverick Petrie, who each chipped in one.

Purcell recorded 41 saves for New Hamburg. The Firebirds incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. New Hamburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Hoffman was ejected from the game. The Braves' Ben Larder stopped 43 shots out of the 48 that he faced. Tavistock incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
