Dundas beats Brantford 6-5 after comeback scare

The Brantford Blast tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Dundas Real McCoys would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-5.

Dundas made the score 4-1 on a goal by Steve Hurst at 12:53 in the second period, and Brantford got as close as 4-3 when Mike Burgoyne scored 6:30 into the third period.

The Real McCoys was paced on offense by Chris McGuffin and Cam Watson, who combined for five points. McGuffin racked up two goals and Watson also added one goal and two assists.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:07 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Dundas forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Real McCoys surpassed its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game. The Blast were unable to stop Dundas from sending pucks towards the net, and the Real McCoys eventually piled up 37 shots on goal. Dundas' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Dundas also got points from Simon Mangos, who also had one goal and one assist and Watson, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Dundas also got a goal from Omar Ennaffati as well. More assists for Dundas came via Shawn Snider, who had three and Curtis Campbell, Keegan Rowe, and Scott Stafford, who contributed two each.

Brantford's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the Blast had been spending in the box. Brantford kept the Real McCoys' goalie busy throughout the game, and Mike Mole made 51 saves on 56 shots.

The Blast were helped by Chris Rebernik, who registered two goals and one assist. Rebernik scored the first of his two goals at 4:58 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Cam Sault picked up the assist. Rebernik's next tally made the score 4-4 with 12:04 left in the third period. Brantford earned a power play opportunity when Hurst was put in the box for high sticking. Burgoyne assisted on the tally. Brantford additionally got points from Burgoyne, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Brantford also had goals scored by Derek Medeiros and Brad Jones, who scored one goal each. In addition, Brantford received assists from Andrew Marcoux, who had two and Mark Taylor, Kevin Christmas, and Ryan McCarthy, who each chipped in one.

Dundas registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. The Real McCoys ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Ostermier was ejected from the game. Brett Leggat made 31 saves for the Blast on 37 shots. Brantford registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. Team's Kyle Montpetit and Joel Prpic were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
