M1 West Virginia University beats M1 Mercyhurst University 5-4 after comeback scare

The M1 Mercyhurst University Lakers tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the M1 West Virginia University Mountaineers would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

M1 West Virginia University took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have M1 Mercyhurst University storm back on a Patrick Schafer goal 17:47 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The 23 shots that the Mountaineers put on net surpassed M1 West Virginia University's average of 1.0 shot per game this season. The Mountaineers took advantage of the Lakers' penalties, tallying two goals off of three power play opportunities.

M1 West Virginia University was helped by Gerard Clayton, who had one goal. Clayton scored on the power play 9:21 into the second period to make the score 2-2. The Mountaineers had gotten the advantage when M1 Mercyhurst University's Schafer was sent off for cross checking. Nicholas Burt picked up the assist. M1 West Virginia University additionally got points from Trey Bracy, who also registered one goal and one assist and Brandon Richards, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for M1 West Virginia University included Sean Vandamme and Kyle Dolly, who each put in one.
