M1 Western Michigan University vanquishes M1 Rochester College in shootout, 6-5 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Western Michigan University Stallions defeated the M1 Rochester College Warriors in a shootout 6-5 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout. M1 Rochester College's shootout goal was scored by Matt Kadolph. M1 Western Michigan University also got a shootout goal from Jacob Taiariol.

The Stallions saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. M1 Western Michigan University made the score 5-3 on a goal by Taiariol at 17:49 in the second period. The Warriors evened things up at 5-5 on a goal by Brock Malatches at 17:47 in the third period.

The Stallions was paced on offense by Taiariol and Brandon Grillo, who combined for five points. Taiariol racked up two goals and Grillo also added one goal and two assists.

M1 Western Michigan University forced M1 Rochester College's goaltenders to work all game long, ripping 31 shots and forcing 25 saves. Zakk Olvin made 11 stops and Brenden Kruckenberg made 14.

M1 Western Michigan University additionally got points from Cameron Carson, who also had one goal and one assist and Grillo, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Cole Kapovich also scored for M1 Western Michigan University. More assists for M1 Western Michigan University came via Jesse Cameron, Niko Michos, and Andrew Vanek, who contributed one each and Mitch Rogowski and Jared Vincek, who each chipped in two.

The Warriors were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled six minors and one major for 17 minutes in penalty time.

M1 Rochester College was led by Jake Zarzycki, who tallied two goals and one assist. Zarzycki scored the first of his two goals at 6:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 M1 Rochester College. Spencer Ashby provided the assist. Zarzycki's next tally made the score 3-2 M1 Western Michigan University with 7:58 left in the second period. The Warriors had gotten the advantage when the Stallions' Joey Olmsted was sent off for hooking. George Holt picked up the assist. M1 Rochester College also got points from Joshua Botimer, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Kadolph, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Malatches, who also registered one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for M1 Rochester College were Nicholas Beaune and Kyle Truscott, who contributed one each.

M1 Western Michigan University's Brandon Haase stopped 24 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Stallions incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. M1 Rochester College registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
