M1 Oakland University uses shootout to best M1 Western Michigan University, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Oakland University Golden Grizzlies defeated the M1 Western Michigan University Stallions in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams.

M1 Oakland University overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Golden Grizzlies was down 4-2 after a goal by M1 Western Michigan University's Mike Moroso at 3:23 in the third period. M1 Oakland University tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Patrick Smiatacz at 11:25 in the third period.

The Golden Grizzlies got the win behind a great game by Frank Saputo, who had one goal and two assists. Saputo scored 6:20 into the third period to make the score 4-3 M1 Western Michigan University. Smiatacz provided the assist.

M1 Oakland University excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Golden Grizzlies kept the Stallions' goalie busy throughout the game, and Joan Cizzo made 30 saves on 35 shots.

M1 Oakland University also got points from Smiatacz, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. M1 Oakland University also had goals scored by Nick Rogers and Kyle Nelson, who scored one goal each. More assists for M1 Oakland University came via Tom Kilgore, who had two and Will Shier and Andrew Parus, who each chipped in one.

With 25 shots on target during the contest, M1 Western Michigan University exceeded the 0.1 shots it averages per game this year.

M1 Western Michigan University additionally got points from Jesse Cameron, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Zach Mudge also scored for M1 Western Michigan University. In addition, M1 Western Michigan University received assists from Nicholas Elliott, Niko Michos, and Jordan Blake-Jones, who contributed one each.

Corey Hrischuk rejected 21 shots on goal for M1 Oakland University. The Golden Grizzlies incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Stallions incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
