Ruggi's big game bests Fort Erie in 6-2 Welland win

Gabe Ruggi was all over the ice for the Welland Jr. Canadians, as he tallied one goal and three assists in Welland's 6-2 win over the Fort Erie Meteors.

Ruggi scored 6:07 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Welland. Brayden Stortz picked up the assist. Ruggi dished an assist on Mitch Reid's goal that made the score 1-0 Welland at 12:56 into the first period. He then added assists on Thomas Flack's goal at 13:56 into the second and on Josh Allan's goal at 7:14 into the third.

Fort Erie's 23 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Meteors let up four goals while on the penalty kill.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:06 into the second period. Eight fighting penalties were dished out along with six game misconducts.

The Jr. Canadians forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 15 minors and two majors for 90 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game Welland had been spending in the box. The Jr. Canadians forced Fort Erie's goalies to work without much rest, ripping 53 shots and forcing 47 saves. Mackenzie Savard made 30 stops and Liam Conway made 17. Welland's goal total was higher than its season average. The Jr. Canadians average 3.7 goals per game. Welland got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Welland additionally got points from Allan, who also finished with one goal and three assists. Jack Fitzgerald also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Nathan MacDuff, Adam Barron, and Konner Roskovich, who contributed one each.

The Meteors' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 21 minors and two majors for 132 minutes in penalty time. Fort Erie surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Meteors were helped by Anthony Passero, who registered one goal. Passero scored on the power play 7:00 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Welland. Fort Erie had gained a power play chance when Max Cipriano was whistled for tripping. Vito Scaringi assisted on the tally. Fort Erie also got a goal from Dakota Miskolczi as well. More assists for Fort Erie came via Bryce Martin and Declan Conway, who each chipped in one.

Chris Janzen rejected 16 shots on goal for the Jr. Canadians. For Welland, Roskovich and Tyler Stranges were ejected from the contest. The Meteors registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Team's Paolo Sivolotti, Joe Costello, and Vincent Robbins were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
