Stratford vanquishes Guelph in shootout, 8-7 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Stratford Cullitons defeated the Guelph Hurricanes in a shootout 8-7 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams.

Brook Hiddink was all over the ice for Stratford, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Hiddink scored the first of his two goals at 2:21 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Stratford. Shane O Brien provided the assist. Hiddink's next tally made the score 7-6 Stratford with 1:11 left in the third period. The Cullitons had taken the advantage when Guelph's Dylan Sayle got sent off for high sticking. Tyson Baker picked up the assist.

Stratford forced the Hurricanes goalie Jason DaSilva to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. The Cullitons bested their season scoring average. Stratford has scored at the pace of 4.3 goals per game during the current campaign. The Cullitons cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring three goals on four chances. Stratford could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Stratford also got points from Joe Leahy, who also finished with one goal and two assists, O Brien, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Zach Van Louwe, who also registered one goal and one assist. Stratford also had goals scored by Jared Nash and Patrick McKelvie, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Stratford were Mitch Brooks, who had two and Trevor Sauder, Hayden Broomhead, Jeff McArdle, and Justin Graham, who each chipped in one.

The Cullitons were unable to stop Guelph from sending pucks towards the net, and the Hurricanes eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. Guelph surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Hurricanes average 3.9 goals per contest.

Guelph was led by Patrick Kudla, who racked up two goals and three assists. Kudla scored the first of his two goals at 8:35 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Stratford. Matt Nightingale assisted on the tally. Kudla's next tally made the score 4-2 Stratford with 2:40 left in the first period. The Hurricanes had gotten the advantage when Stratford's Nash was sent off for interference. Peyton Backus picked up the assist. Guelph additionally got points from Nightingale, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Guelph included Brody Milne and Jordan Hatzinger, who each put in two. More assists for Guelph came via Mackenzie Flewelling, who had three and Jake Wyse, Sebastian Stangherlin, Cameron Stokes, and Stefano Pezzetta, who contributed one each.

The Cullitons' Nicholas Caldwell stopped 32 shots out of the 39 that he faced. DaSilva rejected 30 shots on goal for Guelph. The Hurricanes incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
