Chatham wins tough contest against St. Thomas, 5-3

The Chatham Maroons gutted out a close 5-3 win against the St. Thomas Stars.

Chatham gained the winning advantage on a goal by Gus Ford 6:41 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

Alexander Morgan had a great game for the Maroons, netting two goals. Morgan's tallies came at 19:46 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Chatham and 19:07 into the third to make the score 5-3 Chatham.

Chatham's penalty kill excelled, as the Maroons gave up one goal despite allowing nine power plays.

Chatham's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Maroons finished with 26 penalty minutes.

Chatham also had goals scored by Jared Dennis and Michael Levesque, who each put in one. In addition, Chatham received assists from Nate Pietens, Carl Stapleton, Steven Szekesy, Brayden Hopkins, Luc Knight, and Brennan Feasey, who each chipped in one and Connor Annett and Ian Faubert, who contributed two each.

St. Thomas put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Chatham to score on any of its four power plays. The Stars' offense rang up 35 shots on the Maroons' net.

St. Thomas was led by Carson Brookshaw, who registered one goal and one assist. Brookshaw scored 2:10 into the second period to make the score 2-1 St. Thomas. Dane Johnstone picked up the assist. St. Thomas also got points from Johnstone, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Ryan Valentini also scored for St. Thomas. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Carson Moniz, who had two and Jay Dekker and Jesse Anderson, who each chipped in one.

Jake Patterson made 32 saves for Chatham on 35 shots. Brendan Polasek recorded 21 saves for the Stars. St. Thomas incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
