Stratford holds on for 6-4 win against Waterloo

The Waterloo Siskins tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Stratford Cullitons held on for a 6-4 victory.

A goal by Hayden Broomhead put Stratford up 6-3 in the third period, but Waterloo pulled to within two on Danny Hanlon's tally 18:09 into the third period.

The Siskins' power play was ineffective against the Cullitons' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Stratford forced Waterloo goalie Evgeny Kiselev to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. The Cullitons cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Stratford was helped by Mitch Vandergunst, who registered one goal. Vandergunst scored 7:14 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stratford. Tyson Baker picked up the assist. Stratford additionally got points from Mitch Brooks, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Baker, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Stratford included Joe Leahy and Zach Van Louwe, who scored one goal each. In addition, Stratford received assists from Patrick McKelvie, who had two, Brook Hiddink and Trevor Sauder, who each chipped in one, and Carter Allen and Shane O Brien, who contributed three each.

The Siskins were helped by Kyle Betts, who grabbed two goals. Betts scored the first of his two goals at 4:01 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Stratford. Christian Mroczkowski assisted on the tally. Betts' next tally made the score 5-3 Stratford with 16:25 left in the third period. Mroczkowski picked up the assist. Waterloo also got points from Hanlon, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Chase Campbell also scored for Waterloo. More assists for Waterloo came via Evan Kearns, who had two and Eric Cimino, Gary Mantz, and Matt Doty, who each chipped in one.

The Cullitons' Nicholas Caldwell stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Stratford incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Evgeny Kiselev made 37 saves for Waterloo on 43 shots. The Siskins incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
