Chatham beats St. Thomas 5-4 after comeback scare

The St. Thomas Stars tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Chatham Maroons held on for a 5-4 victory.

Chatham made the score 5-3 on a goal by Alexander Morgan at 14:06 in the third period, and St. Thomas got as close as 5-4 when Spencer Hutchinson scored 19:55 into the third period.

Brayden Hopkins was all over the ice for the Maroons, as he tallied two goals in the win. Hopkins' tallies came on the power play at 16:07 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Chatham and 8:44 into the third to make the score 3-2 Chatham.

Chatham stifled the Stars' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. St. Thomas was unable to stop the Maroons from sending pucks towards the net, and Chatham eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

Chatham also had goals scored by John Bowen and Brett Storr, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Jared Dennis, who had two, Steven Beenackers, who had three, and Trevor Richardson, Steven Szekesy, Michael Verboom, and Brennan Feasey, who contributed one each.

The Stars forced the Maroons goalie Bo Bessette to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. St. Thomas could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Stars were led by Zach Grzelewski, who finished with one goal and two assists. Grzelewski scored 7:13 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Dane Johnstone assisted on the tally. St. Thomas additionally got points from Hutchinson, who also racked up one goal and one assist and John Warren, who also had one goal and one assist. St. Thomas also got a goal from Carter McCormick as well. In addition, St. Thomas received assists from Reed Horvat, who had one.

Chatham's Bessette stopped 31 shots out of the 35 that he faced. The Maroons incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Nikolas Dampier made 31 saves for St. Thomas on 36 shots. The Stars registered zero goals on six power play opportunities.
