Fresno Monsters survives Valencia Flyers comeback, wins 5-3

Valencia Flyers tried to dig itself out of a three-goal hole, but Fresno Monsters held on for a 5-3 victory.

Fresno Monsters made the score 5-2 on a goal by Kyle Jelinski at 9:56 in the second period, and Valencia Flyers got as close as 5-3 when Luc Whyte scored 14:59 into the third period.

Brantt Heble was all over the ice for Fresno Monsters, as he racked up two goals in the win. Heble found the back of the net on the power play 10:03 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while 8:00 into the second to make the score 4-2 Fresno Monsters.

Fresno Monsters' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and two majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. Fresno Monsters surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. Fresno Monsters forced Valencia Flyers' netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, racking up 46 shots and forcing 41 saves. Silvan Delb made 28 stops and Ole Nilsen made 13.

Fresno Monsters also got points from Evan Ingram, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Fresno Monsters also got a goal from Mike Nolan as well. In addition, Fresno Monsters received assists from Michael Freeman, who had three and Parker Olson, Mark Shroyer, Daniel Goodwin, and Jonathan Bengtsson, who contributed one each.

Valencia Flyers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and three majors for 97 minutes in penalty time. Valencia Flyers had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game. Valencia Flyers forced Fresno Monsters goalie Nathan Churchill to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots. Valencia Flyers gave up more goals than its normal season average. Valencia Flyers averages 2.5 goals allowed per game.

Valencia Flyers also had goals scored by Niklas Giers and Wil Barnett, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Valencia Flyers were Jakob Kranabetter, Brian Martinez, and Bas Assaf, who each chipped in one.

Nathan Churchill made 31 saves for Fresno Monsters on 34 shots. Fresno Monsters registered three goals on 12 power play opportunities. For Fresno Monsters, Ingram was ejected from the game. Valencia Flyers registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Team's Ray Wilson, Eddie Cordero, and Kranabetter were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
