Columbus vanquishes Louisiana in shootout, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Nick Curry scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Columbus Cottonmouths picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (2-1 SO) win over the Louisiana IceGators.

The shootout lasted for 14 attempts between the teams. Louisiana got a shootout goal from Jake Hauswirth. Columbus also got a shootout goal from Levi Lind.

The Cottonmouths overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Columbus was down 4-3 after a goal by the IceGators' Bret Peppler at 3:35 in the third period. The Cottonmouths tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Lind at 19:09 in the third period.

Craig Simchuk was all over the ice for Columbus, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Simchuk scored 5:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Columbus. Patrick McCadden picked up the assist.

The 44 shots that the Cottonmouths put on net surpassed Columbus' average of 31.3 shots per game this season.

Columbus also got points from Andy Willigar, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Columbus also got a goal from Bryce Williamson as well. More assists for Columbus came via Kyle Johnson, Mike Switzer, and Neilsson Arcibal, who contributed one each.

Louisiana forced the Cottonmouths goalie Andrew Loewen to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

The IceGators were helped by Adam Stuart, who registered one goal. Stuart scored 11:22 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Shawn McNeil provided the assist. Louisiana additionally got points from Hauswirth, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Jeremy Boyer also scored for Louisiana. In addition, Louisiana received assists from Matt Viola, who had two and Bobby Watson, Geordie Wudrick, and Mitchell Stretch, who each chipped in one.

Andrew Loewen made 40 saves for Columbus on 44 shots. The Cottonmouths totaled 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors and two majors and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Louisiana's Marco De Filippo stopped 39 shots out of the 43 that he faced. The IceGators totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-1 on the power play.
