Columbus boosted by Szabados' play in net, beats Knoxville 4-1

The Columbus Cottonmouths relied on the sparkling performance of Shannon Szabados in net to grab a 4-1 win against the Knoxville Ice Bears.

Columbus was led by Patrick McCadden, who had one goal. McCadden scored 9:32 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Columbus. Andy Willigar provided the assist.

By firing 40 shots on goal, the Cottonmouths exceeded the 31.0 shots they average per game this year.

Columbus also got points from Craig Simchuk, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Columbus also had goals scored by Shawn Bates and Bryce Williamson, who each put in one. In addition, Columbus received assists from Louis Belisle, Will Aide, Levi Lind, Matt Gingera, and Chris Bailer, who contributed one each.

Knoxville forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and two majors for 20 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Bears surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. Knoxville put 32 shots on net during the contest, more than the 20.4 it averages per game.

Columbus' Szabados stopped 31 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Cottonmouths totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Curtis Martinu made 36 saves for the Ice Bears on 40 shots. Knoxville registered zero goals on one power play opportunities.
