Peoria uses shootout to best Huntsville, 4-3 (3-0 SO)

The Peoria Rivermen and the Huntsville Havoc both failed to score in overtime, but Peoria won the game 4-3 (3-0 SO) after Jake Trask's deciding goal in the shootout.

The shootout lasted for six attempts between the teams. In addition to the clincher, the Rivermen got shootout goals from Trask and Garrett Vermeersch.

Peoria saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Rivermen made the score 2-0 on a power play goal by Alex Hudson at 13:51 in the second period. Huntsville evened things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Steve Morra at 19:58 in the third period.

Peoria's penalty kill excelled, as the Rivermen gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Peoria racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The Rivermen had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Peoria stifled the Havoc's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Rivermen put 41 shots on net during the contest, more than the 26.0 they average per game.

Peoria additionally got points from Morra, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Vermeersch also scored for Peoria. More assists for Peoria came via Nick Schneider, who had two and Dan Bremner and Trask, who each chipped in one.

Huntsville was often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. The Havoc surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. With 36 shots on target during the contest, Huntsville exceeded the 26.1 shots it averages per game this year.

The Havoc were helped by Drew Akins, who grabbed two goals. Akins scored the first of his two goals at 9:32 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Luke Greiner provided the assist. Akins' next tally made the score 3-2 Huntsville with 10:01 left in the third period. Nick Wheeler picked up the assist. Huntsville also got points from Wheeler, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Joe Tolles, who had one and Matt Viola, who had two.

Dustin Carlson rejected 33 shots on goal for Peoria. The Rivermen registered two goals on 10 power play opportunities. Kevin Genoe recorded 37 saves for Huntsville.
