Loewen leads Columbus to shutout victory over Pensacola

Columbus Civic Center    Sun, Jan 18, 2015

Andrew Loewen recorded a shutout against the Pensacola Ice Flyers as the Columbus Cottonmouths picked up a 1-0 win.

Will Aide's game-winning tally was the game's only goal. It came at 5:03 in the third period. Craig Simchuk provided the assist.

Pensacola's power play was ineffective against Columbus' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Cottonmouths excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Columbus' defense was surprisingly good. The Cottonmouths average 2.8 goals allowed per game. By firing 36 shots on goal, Columbus exceeded the 28.3 shots it averages per game this year.

Louis Belisle also scored for Columbus. More assists for Columbus came via Max Cook, who had one.

The Ice Flyers stifled the Cottonmouths' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Pensacola was held below its usual level of production. The Ice Flyers put an average of 3.3 pucks into the net per game. Pensacola relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Nick McParland, Jon Puskar and Adam Pawlick took 19 of the team's 36 shots.

Columbus' Loewen stopped 36 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Cottonmouths incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Max Strang rejected 35 shots on goal for the Ice Flyers. Pensacola incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
