Louisiana uses early goal to top Pensacola, 5-3

The Louisiana IceGators took the lead against the Pensacola Ice Flyers in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 5-3 victory.

Louisiana took over the lead for good with a goal by Tanner Burton at 7:27 in the first period. Matt Viola assisted on the tally.

The IceGators were led by Adam Stuart, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Stuart scored on the power play 1:31 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Louisiana. Benjamin Rubin picked up the assist.

Louisiana surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the IceGators average 2.5 goals per contest. Louisiana took advantage of Pensacola's penalties, tallying two goals off of three power play opportunities. The IceGators were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. Louisiana got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. By firing 33 shots on goal, the IceGators exceeded the 25.8 shots they average per game this year.

Louisiana also got points from Jason Cohen, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, Burton, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Jeremy Boyer, who also registered one goal and one assist. Shawn McNeil also scored for Louisiana. Other players who recorded assists for Louisiana were Chris Wilson, Bret Peppler, and Tyler Barr, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Flyers' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Pensacola is averaging 2.0 goals against for the season.

The Ice Flyers were helped by Adam Pawlick, who had one goal. Pawlick scored on the power play 18:06 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Louisiana. Pensacola earned a power play opportunity when Barr was put in the box for boarding. Jeremy Gates provided the assist. Pensacola also had goals scored by Drew Akins and Brett Lutes, who scored one goal each. More assists for Pensacola came via Drew Baker, Mitchell Good, Brett Beebe, Cody Ferriero, and Steve Bergin, who contributed one each.

Marco De Filippo rejected 27 shots on goal for Louisiana. Garrett Bartus recorded 28 saves for the Ice Flyers. Pensacola totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
