Knoxville holds on for 9-7 win against Huntsville

The Huntsville Havoc tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Knoxville Ice Bears would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 9-7.

Knoxville took a 9-6 lead during the third period, only to have Huntsville storm back on a Colin Hekle goal 17:40 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Ben Power was all over the ice for the Ice Bears, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Power scored the first of his two goals at 3:57 into the third period to make the score 6-5 Huntsville. Brad Pawlowski picked up the assist. Power's next tally made the score 8-6 Knoxville with 8:43 left in the third period.

Knoxville was often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Bears surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. Knoxville bested its season scoring average. This season, the Ice Bears average 4.0 goals per contest. Knoxville struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Havoc to score three power play goals on five chances. The Ice Bears' offense was clicking better than usual and put 43 shots on goal during the game, better than the 28.1 shots per game they average.

Knoxville also got points from Berkley Scott, who also finished with two goals and one assist, Vince Perreault, who also had one goal and one assist, Ryan Salvis, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Josh Cousineau, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Francis Drolet also scored for Knoxville. In addition, Knoxville received assists from Eric Satim, who had two and Jason Price, Peter Neal, Joe Tolles, and David Segal, who each chipped in one.

Huntsville forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The Havoc had been averaging 24.0 minutes in penalties per game. Huntsville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Havoc's goal total was higher than their season average. Huntsville averages 3.5 goals per game. The Havoc relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Jacob Johnstone, Jordan Foreman and Hekle took 16 of the team's 30 shots.

Huntsville was helped by Mike Gurtler, who finished with two goals and one assist. Gurtler scored the first of his two goals at 40 seconds into the first period to make the score 2-0 Huntsville. Justin Cseter assisted on the tally. Gurtler's next tally made the score 5-3 Huntsville with 19:05 left in the second period. Huntsville additionally got points from Ray Ortiz, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Nick Lazorko, who also racked up two goals and one assist, and Johnstone, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Huntsville came via Stuart Stefan, who had two.

Bryan Hince made six saves before being replaced by Braely Torris, who took the win and made 17 saves. The Havoc's starting goalie, Kevin Genoe, made 32 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Jesse Kallechy, who stopped two shots. Huntsville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Corey Bellamy was ejected from the game.
