Pensacola rips Peoria, 6-0

The Pensacola Ice Flyers had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-0 win over the Peoria Rivermen.

Corey Banfield had two goals and two assists to lead Pensacola. Banfield scored the first of his two goals at 1:21 into the third period to make the score 3-0 Pensacola. Paul Rodrigues assisted on the tally. Banfield's next tally made the score 5-0 Pensacola with 2:55 left in the third period. Rodrigues picked up the assist.

The Ice Flyers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and three majors for 35 minutes in penalty time. Pensacola had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Ice Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Peoria to score on any of its five power plays. The 37 shots that Pensacola put on net surpassed the Ice Flyers' average of 31.1 shots per game this season.

Pensacola additionally got points from Rodrigues, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Cody Ferriero, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Adam Pawlick, who also had two goals and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Pensacola were Malcolm Lyles and Drew Akins, who each chipped in one.

The Rivermen did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Peoria averages 2.9 goals per game. The Rivermen's defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Peoria averages 1.9 goal allowed per game. The Rivermen relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Garrett Vermeersch, Shawn Skelly and Matt Summers took 11 of the team's 21 shots.

Pensacola's Max Strang stopped 21 shots out of the 21 that he faced. The Ice Flyers registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Kyle Rank rejected 31 shots on goal for Peoria. The Rivermen ended with 29 minutes in penalty time with two minors and three majors.
