GAME RECAP

Amherstview blows out Picton, 5-1

Prince Edward     Thu, Jan 22, 2015

The Picton Pirates had trouble finding ways to stop the Amherstview Jets, which beat Pirates, 5-1.

Amherstview's Ryan Kaszuba was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 39 saves and let only one puck past him. Kaszuba managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.43 prior to the game.

The Jets were led by Cassidy Bruni, who racked up one goal. Bruni scored on the power play 8:31 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Amherstview. A goalie interference penalty on Nolan Van Vlack had put Amherstview on the power play. Jordan Howe picked up the assist.

The Jets forced Picton's goaltenders to work without much rest, ripping 36 shots and forcing 31 saves. Nick Kazmierczak made 30 stops and Matt Loveys made one. Amherstview excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The defensemen of the Jets were also effective in the Pirates' zone, and came away with two goals.

Others who scored for Amherstview included Cosimo Morin, who had two and Konner Burtenshaw and Cody Jodoin, who scored one goal each. More assists for Amherstview came via Zach Masterson, who had three and Brett Yake, Brody Taylor, Cody Smith, and Ben Bianco, who each chipped in one.

Picton was held below its usual level of production. The Pirates average 4.3 goals per game. Amherstview was unable to stop Picton from sending pucks towards the net, and the Pirates eventually piled up 40 shots on goal. Picton's penalty kill was ineffective, and let in three goals to the Jets' power play unit.

The Pirates were led by Mitchell Merry, who scored the team's only goal. Merry scored 3:55 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Amherstview. Chris Jones provided the assist.

Amherstview incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors. Picton incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
