Dresden blows out Wheatley, 6-2

The Dresden Kings were firing on all cylinders against the Wheatley Sharks, and when the final buzzer sounded Kings emerged with a 6-2 win.

Wheatley's power play was ineffective against Dresden's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Kings were led by John Montgomery, who registered one goal. Montgomery scored on the power play 14:29 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Dresden. Dresden had gained a power play chance when Layne Gouin was whistled for holding. Macks Holmes picked up the assist.

The Kings racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Dresden had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Kings' offense rang up 31 shots on the Sharks' net. Dresden outdid its season average for goals scored. The Kings have scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign. Dresden cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Dresden additionally got points from Dede Cato, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Dillon Liberty, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Dresden included Derrick VanEvery, Will Tetzlaff, and Ross Krieger, who scored one goal each. More assists for Dresden came via Jim McKinlay, Kevin Ritzer, and DJ Sapone, who each chipped in one.

Wheatley kept the Kings' goalie busy throughout the game, and Daniel Tonietto made 30 saves on 32 shots. The Sharks' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Wheatley finished with 26 penalty minutes.

The Sharks were helped by Lucas Raffoul, who racked up one goal. Raffoul scored on the power play 3:18 into the second period to make the score 1-1. A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Wade Esselment had put Wheatley on the power play. Nolan Gardiner provided the assist. Matthew Barnes also scored for Wheatley. In addition, Wheatley received assists from Brett Bowman and Michael Travis, who contributed one each.

Dresden ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Esselment was ejected from the game. Adam Leboeuf recorded 25 saves for the Sharks. For Wheatley, Brendon Anger was ejected from the game.
