Essex uses shootout to best Amherstburg, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Essex 73s defeated the Amherstburg Admirals in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed five turns to complete the shootout.

Essex pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 20 penalty minutes.

The 73s were led by Matthew Hebert, who had one goal. Hebert scored on the power play 6:21 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Essex. Essex earned a power play opportunity when Cole Martyniuk was put in the box for hooking. Scott Bromley picked up the assist.

The 73s stifled Amherstburg's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Essex kept the Admirals' goalie busy throughout the game, and Gianfranco Donato made 42 saves on 46 shots.

Others who scored for Essex included Eric Shaw and Tyler Scott, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Essex were Matt Zelko, Jordan Ryan, Tyler Turner, Daniel Slipchuk, and Daniel McIntyre, who contributed one each.

Amherstburg could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 33 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Admirals were led by Jordan Luciw, who finished with one goal and two assists. Luciw scored short handed 17:16 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Amherstburg found itself down a man on Mark Sobocan's holding. Martyniuk assisted on the tally. Amherstburg also had goals scored by Dan Matoski and Ryan Alexander, who scored one goal each. More assists for Amherstburg came via Brett Banwell and James Brooks, who each chipped in one.

Noah Hedrick made 18 saves for the 73s on 21 shots. Essex registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. The Admirals registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. For Amherstburg, Brett Beattie was ejected from the game.
