Mooretown beats Wallaceburg 5-4 after comeback scare

The Wallaceburg Lakers tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Mooretown Flags would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Mooretown took a 5-3 lead during the third period, only to have Wallaceburg storm back on a Matt Clark goal 19:45 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:47 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with four game misconducts.

The Lakers were unable to stop the Flags from sending pucks towards the net, and Mooretown eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. The Flags were often in penalty trouble, as it ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time.

Mooretown was led by Joe DeSena, who tallied one goal and two assists. DeSena scored 6:06 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Mooretown. Ryan Lyle picked up the assist. Mooretown also got points from Lyle, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Mooretown included Caden Fleming, Frankie White, and Sam Jasmin, who scored one goal each. More assists for Mooretown came via Taylor Declercq, Matt Brandon, and Dan Lumley, who contributed one each.

Wallaceburg racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The Lakers surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. Wallaceburg forced the Flags goalie Brandon Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

Wallaceburg additionally got points from Jeff Brown, who also had one goal and one assist. Brendan Ritchie also scored for Wallaceburg. In addition, Wallaceburg received assists from Jordan Eagan, who had one and Alex Ritchie, who had two.

Brandon Johnson made 35 saves for Mooretown on 39 shots. The Flags registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For Mooretown, Lyle was ejected from the game. Joel Sowinski rejected 33 shots on goal for the Lakers. Wallaceburg registered two goals on six power play opportunities. For the Lakers, Evan Weidenbach, Ritchie, and Ritchie were ejected from the contest.
