Avery stymies Wheatley, Alvinston wins 4-1

The Alvinston Flyers relied on the sparkling performance of Brett Avery in net to grab a 4-1 win against the Wheatley Sharks.

Alvinston was paced by Kirklin Dorman, who had one goal and one assist. Dorman scored on the power play 3:20 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Alvinston. Jordan Hayes provided the assist.

The Flyers forced Wheatley goalie Conner MacKinnon to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. Alvinston was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances.

Others who scored for Alvinston included Karsten Berg, Zach VanEyk, and Carter Campbell, who each put in one. More assists for Alvinston came via Clint Rose and Josh Moore, who contributed one each.

The Sharks could not produce up to their normal offensive output. Wheatley puts an average of 3.4 pucks into the net per game.

The Sharks were led by Mike Reid, who scored the team's only goal. Reid scored on the power play 13:03 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Alvinston. Wheatley earned a power play opportunity when Eric Marsh was put in the box for roughing. Brett Bowman picked up the assist.

Avery recorded 29 saves for the Flyers. Alvinston incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Flyers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Blake Hayes was ejected from the game. The Sharks' MacKinnon stopped 39 shots out of the 43 that he faced. Wheatley totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play. For the Sharks, Shawn Hope was ejected from the game.
