Goderich beats Hanover 7-6 after comeback scare

The Goderich Flyers survived a determined comeback attempt by the Hanover Barons on the way to a 7-6 win.

A goal by Brandon Priestap put Goderich up 7-5 in the third period, but Hanover pulled to within one on Mitchell Pike's tally 18:09 into the third period.

The Flyers forced the Barons' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, racking up 32 shots and forcing 25 saves. Cody Van der Heide made 22 stops and Gord Walmsley made three. Goderich outdid its season average for goals scored. The Flyers average 2.7 goals per game. Goderich capitalized on Hanover's penalties, netting two goals while skating with a man advantage. The Flyers got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Goderich additionally got points from Taylor Helesic, who also registered one goal and one assist and Brad MacIntyre, who also racked up two goals and two assists to lead the team in points. Goderich also got a goal from Jordan Pepper as well. In addition, Goderich received assists from Adam Cousins, Eric McPhee, and Marcel Fohkens, who each chipped in one and Cody McIntyre and Chase Duckworth, who contributed two each.

The Barons were helped by Jarrett Kuntz, who finished with two goals and one assist. Kuntz scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:30 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Hanover earned a power play opportunity when Jesse McIntyre was put in the box for cross checking. Brodie Lemay picked up the assist. Kuntz's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 12:19 left in the second period. The Barons were on a disadvantage when Justin D Graham went off the ice for interference. Hanover also got points from Lemay, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Tyson Soers, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Hanover were Colton Culbert, Denver Hill, Lucas Johnson, and Wendel Cameron, who each chipped in one.

Pat Do rejected 21 shots on goal for Goderich. The Flyers incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Hanover incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
