Walkerton downs Mount Forest in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

The Walkerton Hawks pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Mount Forest Patriots on a clutch goal by Carter Franks.

Walkerton got the win behind a great game by Matt Shields, who had one goal and two assists. Shields scored 17:38 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Walkerton. Tyler Cunningham picked up the assist.

In a losing effort, Mount Forest was led by Luke Richardson, who had two goals and one assist. Richardson scored the first of his two goals at 9:12 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Doug Costanzo assisted on the tally. Richardson's next tally made the score 4-4 with 21 seconds left in the third period. Doug Ardis picked up the assist.

The Hawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Mount Forest power plays. Walkerton's offense rang up 37 shots on the Patriots' net.

Walkerton also got points from Austin Russell, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Walkerton also had goals scored by Chris Gillman and Ryan Hamelin, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Walkerton were Nathan Kramer, Alex Perrault, Lauchlin Elder, and Brett Coulson, who contributed one each.

Mount Forest managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Patriots finished below its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Mount Forest kept the Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Erik Angeli made 37 saves on 41 shots.

Mount Forest additionally got points from Ardis, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Costanzo, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Mount Forest received assists from Trevor Hughson, who had two and Tyler McCracken and Keenan Maclean-Hill, who each chipped in one.

Walkerton incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Cole Wardlaw recorded 32 saves for the Patriots.
