Walkerton erases deficit to stun Hanover, 6-5Walkerton Community Centre Fri, Nov 07, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Hanover Barons could not hold down the Walkerton Hawks, and Hawks erased a four-goal deficit en route to a 6-5 win. Walkerton never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Hawks trailed 5-1 after a goal by Hanover's Brodie Lemay at 17:23 in the first period. Walkerton knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Calvin Penney at 16:57 in the second period. The Hawks scored the game winner at 2:16 in the third period on a goal by Penney. Tyler Cunningham had two goals and one assist to lead Walkerton. Cunningham scored the first of his two goals at 14:48 into the second period to make the score 5-4 Hanover. Cunningham's next tally made the score 6-5 Walkerton with 17:44 left in the third period. Chris Gillman picked up the assist. The Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. Walkerton's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Hawks are averaging 2.4 goals against for the season. Walkerton also got points from Gillman, who also tallied two goals and one assist and Penney, who also registered one goal and one assist. Ryan Hamelin also scored for Walkerton. In addition, Walkerton received assists from Jay Thomson, who had two and Mitch Borden and Brendan Welsh, who each chipped in one. The Barons forced Walkerton's goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 39 shots and forcing 34 saves. Erik Angeli made 34 stops and Tristan Lewis made zero. Hanover stifled the Hawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Barons were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 34 penalty minutes. Hanover was helped by Justin D Graham, who racked up two goals. Graham scored the first of his two goals at 14 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Hanover. Graham's next tally made the score 2-0 Hanover with 19:34 left in the first period. Tyson Soers assisted on the tally. Hanover additionally got points from Tanner Bastien, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Hanover also got a goal from Maxwell Barclay as well. Other players who recorded assists for Hanover were Kyler Jones, Colton Culbert, and Denver Hill, who contributed one each. Walkerton incurred 36 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. The Barons took out Cody Van der Heide after he had made 12 saves and installed Gord Walmsley in goal, where he finished with four saves and the loss.
