Wellesley holds on for 6-5 win against Burford

The Wellesley Applejacks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Burford Bulldogs on the way to a 6-5 win.

Wellesley made the score 6-2 on a goal by Tyler Seguin at 11:46 in the second period, and Burford got as close as 6-5 when Kyle Walker scored 14:09 into the third period.

Matt Schieck had two goals to lead the Applejacks to victory. Schieck's tallies came on the power play at 12:59 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and on the power play 15:36 into the first to make the score 2-2.

Wellesley's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Burford power plays. The Bulldogs were unable to stop the Applejacks from sending pucks towards the net, and Wellesley eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. The Applejacks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Wellesley averages 2.9 goals per game.

Wellesley additionally got points from Seguin, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Wellesley included Paul Morra, Cal Jefferies, and Alex Uttley, who each put in one. More assists for Wellesley came via Reid Denstedt, Jake Wilkinson, and Justin Lebold, who each chipped in one and Parker Wood, Justin Plant, and Hayden Stewart, who contributed two each.

Burford could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 46 minutes in penalties during the game.

Burford also got points from Jesse Brooks, who also had one goal and one assist. Chris Grand also scored for Burford. Other players who recorded assists for Burford were Mitch Randell, who had two and Connor Merritt and Kolby Francis, who each chipped in one.

The Applejacks' Keaton Weiss stopped 24 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Wellesley incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Riley Edwards made 26 saves for the Bulldogs on 32 shots. For Burford, Matt Kliewer was ejected from the game.
