Huge game by Berzins boosts Norwich over Paris, 7-4

The Norwich Merchants' Mitchell Berzins had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing one assist in his team's 7-4 win over the Paris Mounties.

Berzins scored at 3:04 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Norwich and again while 19:14 into the second to make the score 5-1 Norwich.

Paris' power play was ineffective against Norwich's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Merchants' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Paris power plays. Norwich bested its season scoring average. The Merchants have scored at the pace of 3.4 goals per game during the current campaign. Norwich got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. The Merchants could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Kurtis Lavis also scored for Norwich. In addition, Norwich received assists from Braeden Shand, who had two, Jamie Kelly, who had three, and Brandon Velda, Matt Zilke, Troy Lamoure, and Brett Banks, who each chipped in one.

The Mounties kept Norwich's goalie busy throughout the game, and Patrick Maziarz made 31 saves on 35 shots. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Paris could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 32 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Mounties were helped by Ryan Stephenson, who had one goal and one assist. Stephenson scored 17:40 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Brian Mueller assisted on the tally. Paris additionally got points from Mitchell Harvey, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Paris also had goals scored by Joel Penticast and Garrett Kirby, who scored one goal each. More assists for Paris came via Clayton Chalmers and Brodie Smith, who contributed one each.

The Merchants registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. Davis McLean made six saves before being replaced by Zach Shomphe, who took the loss and made 14 saves.
