Woodstock uses early goal to top Tavistock, 3-1

The Woodstock Navy Vets beat the Tavistock Braves, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

A goal 8:17 into the first period by Mike Gillespie proved to be the game winner, and powered Woodstock to the victory. The Navy Vets earned a power play opportunity when Jordie Schneider was put in the box for cross checking. Dan Haig assisted on the tally.

Woodstock's Michael Roefs was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 28 saves and let only one puck past him. Roefs managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.01 prior to the game.

The Navy Vets pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 32 penalty minutes.

Woodstock's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Tavistock power plays.

The Navy Vets were helped by Justin Elms, who grabbed one goal. Elms scored short handed 15:23 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Woodstock. Woodstock played down a man on Nick Mercier's checking from behind. Woodstock additionally got points from Mackenzie Langford, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Woodstock were Michael Nutt and Garrett Whetham, who each chipped in one.

Tavistock found itself short handed often, totaling 28 penalty minutes and allowing six power plays.

The Braves were led by Maverick Petrie, who scored the team's only goal. Petrie scored 52 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Woodstock. Braedon Hancock picked up the assist.

For the Navy Vets, Mercier was ejected from the game. Tavistock's Ben Larder stopped 27 shots out of the 30 that he faced. The Braves ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jamie Shoemaker was ejected from the game.
