Woodstock outlasts New Hamburg, 6-4

The game between the Woodstock Navy Vets and the New Hamburg Firebirds was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Woodstock emerged with a 6-4 win.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Austin Richardson at 3:02 of the third period.

The Navy Vets were led by Justin Elms, who racked up one goal and one assist. Elms scored 5:29 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Woodstock. Chris Nauts picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 6:19 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Woodstock surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Navy Vets have scored at the pace of 3.2 goals per game during the current campaign.

Woodstock also got points from Nauts, who also registered one goal and two assists and Richardson, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Woodstock included Cam Leslie, Mike Gillespie, and Jake Schneider, who each put in one. In addition, Woodstock received assists from Braden Hutchison, Matt Jauernig, and Dylan Wettlaufer, who each chipped in one.

Woodstock was unable to stop New Hamburg from sending pucks towards the net, and the Firebirds eventually piled up 47 shots on goal.

New Hamburg was led by Jaden Goetz, who finished with one goal and one assist. Goetz scored 4:56 into the first period to make the score 1-0 New Hamburg. Taylor Wood provided the assist. New Hamburg also had goals scored by Kory Nowak, Ben Playfair, and Shawn Antonides, who scored one goal each. More assists for New Hamburg came via Jay Fried, who had two and Quinten Haddock, David Jennings, and Chris Eckert, who contributed one each.

Michael Roefs recorded 43 saves for the Navy Vets. Woodstock totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Navy Vets ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jeremy Racicot was ejected from the game. The Firebirds' Ryan Purcell stopped 20 shots out of the 25 that he faced. New Hamburg totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-1 on the power play. For the Firebirds, Wood was ejected from the game.
