Schomberg falters on penalty kill, loses to Stayner 7-4

The Schomberg Cougars fell victim to the Stayner Siskins' five power play goals en route to a 7-4 loss.

Stayner was led by Brandon Watson, who registered one goal and one assist. Watson scored 3:30 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Stayner. Sean Healy provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:46 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Siskins forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 12 minors and one major for 89 minutes in penalty time. Stayner surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The Siskins found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Stayner averages 4.6 goals per contest.

Stayner additionally got points from Lucas Jeffery, who also finished with two goals and one assist, Dylan Bursey, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Kyle Lafreniere, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Stayner included Trevor Franklin and Ricky Darrell, who scored one goal each. In addition, Stayner received assists from Griffin Pearce, who had one.

Schomberg was often in penalty trouble, totaling 12 minors and one major for 89 minutes in penalty time. The Cougars had been averaging 31.0 minutes in penalties per game. Schomberg's offense rang up 41 shots on the Siskins' net. The Cougars were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to two goals off of 10 man advantages. The defensemen of Schomberg were also effective in Stayner's zone, and came away with two goals.

The Cougars were helped by Brandon Yorke, who grabbed one goal. Yorke scored 6:21 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Cam Russell picked up the assist. Schomberg also got points from Jordan Kreller, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Schomberg also had goals scored by Kiefer McIntosh and Declan Lampe, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Schomberg were Mitchell Robinson, Ryley Egerton, Blake Culley, Justin Formenton, and Tanner Smith, who each chipped in one.

Trevor Bloch rejected 37 shots on goal for the Siskins. For Stayner, Jamieson Buck and Jackson Clarke were ejected from the contest. Schomberg's starting goalie, Taylor Ewart, made 18 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Luke Gamoyda, who stopped four shots. Team's Derek Neilly and Yorke were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
