Penetang uses shootout to best Midland, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Penetang Kings defeated the Midland Flyers in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured five attempts between both teams.

Penetang saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Kings made the score 4-2 on a goal by Brandon Frandsen at 18:24 in the third period. Midland evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by Jon Goldsworthy at 19:50 in the third period.

Penetang's penalty kill excelled, as the Kings gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Penetang stifled the Flyers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Kings forced Midland goalie Jake Norton to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots.

Penetang was led by Matt Meher, who registered two goals. Meher scored the first of his two goals at 6:09 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Dallin Blunt (APM) assisted on the tally. Meher's next tally made the score 2-1 Penetang with 10:23 left in the second period. Jordan Schwartz picked up the assist. Penetang also got a goal from Michael Paul as well. Other players who recorded assists for Penetang were Cole Gilligan (APM), who had one and Nate Archer, who had two.

The Flyers kept the Kings' goalie busy throughout the game, and Adam Redgate made 32 saves on 36 shots.

Midland was helped by Evan Buehler, who had two goals. Buehler scored the first of his two goals at 10:35 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Penetang. Neal Burgess provided the assist. Buehler's next tally made the score 4-3 Penetang with 36 seconds left in the third period. Goldsworthy picked up the assist. Midland additionally got points from Goldsworthy, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Steven Pickard, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Midland received assists from Tully Jackson, who had one and Colton Sansom, who had two.

Penetang incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Flyers' Norton stopped 35 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Midland incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors.
