Early goals doom Fergus, falls to Erin, 9-1

The Erin Shamrocks jumped out to a four-point advantage by the end of the first period and beat the Fergus Devils, 9-1.

Chris Grenier was all over the ice for Erin, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Grenier scored the first of his two goals at 12:05 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Erin. Adam Anderson provided the assist. Grenier's next tally made the score 3-0 Erin with 4:58 left in the first period. The Shamrocks were on a disadvantage when Owen Adamson went off the ice for head contact.

Erin's Tom Denstedt was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 45 saves and let only one puck past him. Denstedt certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.59 entering the contest.

The Shamrocks forced Fergus' goalies to work all game long, racking up 40 shots and forcing 31 saves. Alex Elliott made 19 stops and Braydon Evans made 12. Erin bested its season scoring average. The Shamrocks average 3.9 goals per game. Erin could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 66 minutes in penalties during the game.

Erin also got points from Adam Gibson, who also finished with three goals and one assist and James Watson-Bagg, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Erin also had goals scored by Ben Nicolucci and Adam Ferrer, who scored one goal each. More assists for Erin came via Jack Ford, Tyler Nieuwendyk, Tyler Topham, Brad Ranson, and Darcy Hackett, who each chipped in one.

The Devils were held below their usual level of production. Fergus puts an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game. The Devils' offense rang up 46 shots on the Shamrocks' net. Fergus was ineffective while on the power play, as it was held to one goal off of nine man advantages. The Devils could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 54 minutes in penalties during the game.

Paolo Chemello also scored for Fergus. In addition, Fergus received assists from Joey Shaw and Ryan Lavrench, who contributed one each.

Erin registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
