Hagersville uses shootout to best Grimsby, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Hagersville Hawks defeated the Grimsby Peach Kings in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed five turns to complete the shootout.

Hagersville overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Hawks trailed 3-1 after a goal by Grimsby's Trevor McEneny at 8:42 in the second period. Hagersville tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Matt Rimac at 16:08 in the third period.

The Peach Kings' power play was ineffective against the Hawks' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Hagersville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in nine chances. Grimsby was unable to stop the Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Hagersville eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. The Hawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 48 minutes in penalties during the game.

Others who scored for Hagersville included Kyle Phibbs and Mitch Green, who scored one goal each. More assists for Hagersville came via Jonathan Pace, John Monture, Brayden Hill, Cole Martin, Derek Friesen, and Dan Mederios, who contributed one each.

The Peach Kings put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Hagersville to score on any of its three power plays. Grimsby forced the Hawks goalie Lucaciu Horia to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. The Peach Kings could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Grimsby was helped by Griffin Roubos, who had one goal. Roubos scored 19:58 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Grimsby. Derek Rotter provided the assist. Dillon Cipretti also scored for Grimsby. In addition, Grimsby received assists from Brennan Smith, who had two and Liam McCrory, Matthew Jambrosich, and Malcolm Lynett, who each chipped in one.

Hagersville's Horia stopped 44 shots out of the 47 that he faced. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dan Pugliese was ejected from the game. Jeremy Currie made 28 saves for the Peach Kings on 31 shots. For Grimsby, Curtis Jacques was ejected from the game.
