Sydney Ice Dogs vanquishes Newcastle North Stars in shootout, 5-4

Simon Barg scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Sydney Ice Dogs picked up the extra point in a 5-4 win over Newcastle North Stars.

The shootout lasted for six attempts between the teams.

Sydney Ice Dogs came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Sydney Ice Dogs trailed 3-0 after a goal by Newcastle North Stars' Brian Bales at 10:26 in the first period. Sydney Ice Dogs knotted things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Adam Geric at 8:04 in the third period.

Sydney Ice Dogs' offense was clicking better than usual and put 29 shots on goal during the game, better than the 3.3 shots per game it averages.

Sydney Ice Dogs was helped by Billy Cliff, who racked up two goals. Cliff scored the first of his two goals at 14:26 into the first period to make the score 3-2 Newcastle North Stars. Barg assisted on the tally. Cliff's next tally made the score 4-3 Sydney Ice Dogs with 14:50 left in the third period. Dave Dunwoodie picked up the assist. Sydney Ice Dogs also had goals scored by Shane Southwood and Richard Tesarik, who scored one goal each. In addition, Sydney Ice Dogs received assists from Patrick Ward, Shannon McGregor, and Paul Baranzelli, who each chipped in one.

Newcastle North Stars got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. By firing 31 shots on goal, Newcastle North Stars exceeded the 2.9 shots it averages per game this year.
