Lansing Capitals 16U falls to CYA 16U after surprising comeback

CYA 16U rallied from three goals down to secure a 5-3 win over Lansing Capitals 16U.

CYA 16U never led in the game until netting the game winner. CYA 16U was down 3-0 after a power play goal by Lansing Capitals 16U's Rex Moe at 10:06 in the second period. CYA 16U knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Billy Petersen at 2:59 in the third period. CYA 16U netted the game winner at 9:51 in the third period on a goal by Petersen.

Cooper Haar had two goals to lead CYA 16U to victory. Haar found the back of the net 12:10 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Lansing Capitals 16U and again while 16:44 into the third to make the score 5-3 CYA 16U.

CYA 16U surpassed its usual scoring output this season. CYA 16U averages 2.8 goals per game. CYA 16U could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game. The defensemen of CYA 16U were also effective in Lansing Capitals 16U's zone, and came away with two goals.

CYA 16U also got points from Demetri Katsis, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. CYA 16U also got a goal from Nick Chirillo as well. More assists for CYA 16U came via Ben Perkins, who had three and Jackson Decker, Jonathan Lakhani, Kevin Kastholm, Kilian Hammersmith, Bryce Murphy, and Taylor Papesh, who contributed one each.

Lansing Capitals 16U was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 18 penalty minutes.

Lansing Capitals 16U was helped by Riley Hestwood, who racked up one goal. Hestwood scored on the power play 7:26 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Lansing Capitals 16U. A roughing penalty on Decker had put Lansing Capitals 16U on the power play. Zack Olen provided the assist. Reagan Wortz also scored for Lansing Capitals 16U. Other players who recorded assists for Lansing Capitals 16U were Grant Ledford and Ryan Hein, who each chipped in two.

CYA 16U registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Lansing Capitals 16U registered three goals on eight power play opportunities.
