Point Mallard uses big second period to beat Topeka, 6-2

The Point Mallard Ducks scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the Topeka Capitals and clinch a 6-2 win.

Jake Champaign had a great game for Point Mallard, netting two goals. Champaign found the back of the net 12:02 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Point Mallard and again while on the power play 19:27 into the first to make the score 2-0 Point Mallard.

The Ducks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Point Mallard has scored at the pace of 3.8 goals per game during the current campaign. The Ducks got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Point Mallard additionally got points from Jake Cox, who also registered one goal and three assists to lead the team in points and Justin Provencher, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Point Mallard included Noah Gilreath and Brad Reitter, who each put in one. More assists for Point Mallard came via Justin Delisle and Matt Goodman, who each chipped in one and Josh Hamilton, Killian Gray, and Justin Dunn, who contributed two each.

Topeka's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the Capitals had been spending in the box. Topeka's offense operated below its season average. The Capitals put an average of 4.1 pucks into the net per game.

Topeka was helped by Joe Stoneburner, who tallied one goal. Stoneburner scored 19:51 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Point Mallard. John Cuni picked up the assist. Topeka also got points from Cuni, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Andrew Cooley, who had one and Dylan Wattles, who had two.

Point Mallard's Roman Bengert stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. The Ducks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Capitals' starting goalie, Ryan Lund, made nine saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Brett Malkmus, who stopped 12 shots. Topeka registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
