Billings beats Yellowstone 7-1 as Birklid gets hat trick

A hat trick by Cameron Birklid was the highlight in Bulls' 7-1 win against the Yellowstone Quake.

Birklid's first goal came 19:32 into the first period. He then added goals at 19:44 into the first and at 19:47 into the third.

The Billings Bulls' Ray Smith was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 41 saves and let only one puck past him. Smith certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.71 entering the contest.

Billings' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Yellowstone power plays. Yellowstone was unable to stop the Bulls from sending pucks towards the net, and Billings eventually piled up 52 shots on goal. The Bulls found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Billings averages 3.5 goals per game.

Billings additionally got points from Bryce Jensen, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Nick Rizzo, who also registered one goal and one assist, TJ Theodosopoulos, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Tristan Henrichs, who also had one goal and two assists. More assists for Billings came via Steven Thompson, who had three and Wolfgang Davis, Torin Foundos, and Joe Mata, who each chipped in one.

The Quake's offense rang up 42 shots on the Bulls' net.

Yellowstone was led by Sawyer Scanlan, who scored the team's only goal. Scanlan scored 1:48 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Billings. Ross Mullen provided the assist.

Billings incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Quake's Lance Knudson stopped 45 shots out of the 52 that he faced. Yellowstone incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
