Huge game by Sunde boosts Southern Tier over Minnesota, 5-2Schwan SR-3 Tue, Dec 09, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Mark Sunde had one goal and two assists to lead the Southern Tier Xpress to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Flying Aces. Sunde beat Kevin OShea with a shot 15:58 into the first period on the power play to make the score 2-0 Southern Tier. Southern Tier had gained a power play chance when Tyler Gallagher was whistled for cross checking. Owen Harris picked up the assist. Sunde dished an assist on Alec Hooper's goal that made the score 4-1 Southern Tier at 9:24 into the second period. He added another helper on Tobias Gabrielsen's goal that made the score 5-1 Southern Tier at 18:21 into the second period.The Xpress' penalty kill excelled, as Southern Tier gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays. The Xpress racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 51 minutes in penalty time. Southern Tier surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. The Xpress stifled Minnesota's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The defensemen of Southern Tier were also effective in the Flying Aces' zone, and came away with two goals. Southern Tier also got points from Hooper, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Gabrielsen, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Southern Tier also had goals scored by Andre Vanlew and Victor McCutcheon, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Southern Tier were Brandon Desrosiers, who had two and Cody Maulsby and Brian Grant, who each chipped in one. Minnesota was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and two majors for 44 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 25.0 minutes per game the Flying Aces had been spending in the box. Minnesota was led by Blake Neumann, who finished with one goal. Neumann scored 1:25 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Southern Tier. Jake Mullendore assisted on the tally. Minnesota also got a goal from AJ Gullickson as well. In addition, Minnesota received assists from Matt Olson, Bradee Thompson, and Jesse Brown, who contributed one each. Cody Gibson recorded 25 saves for the Xpress. Southern Tier registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. The Flying Aces' starting goalie, Kevin OShea, made 13 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Dakota McDonald, who stopped 12 shots.
