Malkmus leads Topeka to shutout victory over Point Mallard

Brett Malkmus made 32 saves to complete the shutout and led the Topeka Capitals to a 3-0 win against the Point Mallard Ducks.

Topeka's penalty kill excelled, as the Capitals gave up zero goals despite allowing nine power plays.

Topeka was sparked by Alex Sauer, who racked up one goal. Sauer scored 1:54 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Topeka. Hank Roers provided the assist.

The Capitals forced Ducks' goaltenders to work in net, totaling 31 shots and forcing 28 saves. Cooper Seedott made 20 stops and Billy Wager made eight. Topeka stifled Point Mallard's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Capitals featured an improved defense during the game. Topeka gives up 2.9 goals on average per game. The Capitals were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 22 penalty minutes.

Topeka also got points from Roers, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Tre Kautzman also scored for Topeka. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Kyle Rimbach and Trey Opack, who each chipped in one.

The Ducks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Topeka power plays. Point Mallard's offense operated below its season average. The Ducks average 4.2 goals per game. Topeka was unable to stop Point Mallard from sending pucks towards the net, and the Ducks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Point Mallard incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
