Cumberland falls apart in second, loses to Ottawa, 9-0

The Cumberland Grads allowed the Ottawa Senators to net five goals during the second period and fell, 9-0.

Ottawa was boosted by Alexandre Savard-Belanger, who turned in a shutout with 27 saves. Savard-Belanger managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.26 prior to the game.

Cumberland's power play was ineffective against the Senators' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:57 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Ottawa racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Senators surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. Ottawa put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Grads to score on any of their eight power plays. The Senators' defense was surprisingly good. Ottawa gives up 2.4 goals on average per game. The Senators kept Cumberland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Paul Leger made 24 saves on 33 shots. Ottawa outdid its season average for goals scored. The Senators average 4.0 goals per game.

Ottawa was helped by Daniel Sarracco, who registered one goal. Sarracco scored 17:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Ottawa. Shawn Lynch assisted on the tally. Ottawa also got points from Lynch, who also finished with one goal and three assists and Carl Faucher, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Ottawa also got a goal from Bruno Cheff as well. In addition, Ottawa received assists from Alexandre Way and Thomas Crevier, who contributed one each and Sean Rappleyea, Derek Varrin, Johnathan Kovacevic, Joey Champigny, Zach Car, and Jim Pearson, who each chipped in two.

The Grads forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 12 minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game Cumberland had been spending in the box. The Grads did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Cumberland puts an average of 2.3 pucks into the net per game.

The Senators registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. Ottawa ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matthew Cruickshank was ejected from the game. For the Grads, Brandon Zullo was ejected from the game.
