Cumberland beats Kemptville 9-7 after comeback scare

The Cumberland Grads survived a determined comeback attempt by the Kemptville 73s on the way to a 9-7 win.

A goal by Zackhary Salloum put Cumberland up 9-6 in the third period, but Kemptville pulled to within two on Alex Row's tally 17:16 into the third period.

Martin Frechette was all over the ice for the Grads, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Frechette scored the first of his two goals at 12:04 into the first period to make the score 3-2 Kemptville. Branden Makara picked up the assist. Frechette's next tally made the score 4-4 with 16:03 left in the second period. Tyler Pancel provided the assist.

Cumberland forced 73s' netminders to work without much rest, taking 32 shots and forcing 23 saves. Jacob Tugnutt made 14 stops and Nicholas Hodgins made nine. The Grads surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Cumberland averages 2.5 goals per contest. The Grads' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in three goals to the 73s' power play unit.

Cumberland also got points from Pancel, who also grabbed one goal and two assists, Brandon Zullo, who also had two goals and two assists, and Makara, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Cumberland included Nicolas Mattinen and Ted McCabe, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Cumberland were Thomas Mansbridge, Cody Kyle, and Peter Sigouin, who contributed one each and Travis Douglas and Matthew Morin, who each chipped in two.

Kemptville's offense rang up 39 shots on Cumberland's net. The 73s' goal total was higher than their season average. Kemptville averages 3.8 goals per game. The 73s' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Kemptville finished with 24 penalty minutes.

Kemptville additionally got points from Cameron Russell, who also registered one goal and four assists. Kemptville also had goals scored by Owen Guy, Dean Galasso, and Jason Tackett, who each put in one. More assists for Kemptville came via Quinn Wichers, Brandon Cole, and Jake Gaudet, who contributed one each and Brandon Lesway and Erik Brown, who each chipped in two.

Kevin Gollmer recorded 32 saves for the Grads. Cumberland incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. For the 73s, Galasso was ejected from the game.
