Smiths Falls falls to Pembroke after surprising comeback

Undaunted by a three-goal deficit, the Pembroke Lumber Kings battled back to claim a 6-4 victory over the Smiths Falls Bears.

Pembroke never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Lumber Kings fell behind 4-1 after a power play goal by Smiths Falls' Kevin Groulx at 19:07 in the first period. Pembroke tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Felix Chamberland at 10:24 in the second period. The Lumber Kings scored the game winner at 13:30 in the second period on a goal by Chamberland.

Pembroke forced the Bears' goalies to work all game long, ripping 31 shots and forcing 25 saves. Michael Pinios made 16 stops and Cole Skinner made nine. The Lumber Kings surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Pembroke averages 3.8 goals per game.

Pembroke additionally got points from Anthony Nellis, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Alexandre Boivin, who also had two goals and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Pembroke were Adam Dauda, who had two and Jesse Blais, Owen McDade, and Adam Beveridge, who contributed one each.

Smiths Falls forced Lumber Kings' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, launching 37 shots and forcing 33 saves. Jordan Piccolino made 20 stops and Joel Horodziejczyk made 13.

The Bears were led by Neil Doef, who finished with two goals and one assist. Doef scored the first of his two goals at 5:07 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Smiths Falls. Groulx provided the assist. Doef's next tally made the score 3-1 Smiths Falls with 1:24 left in the first period. Smiths Falls had gained a power play chance when Dylan Chase was whistled for high sticking. Jared Henry picked up the assist. Smiths Falls also got points from Groulx, who also registered one goal and two assists. Smiths Falls also got a goal from Chris MacMillan as well. In addition, Smiths Falls received assists from Cole Busschaert, who had two and Taylor Henry and Nicolas Coates, who each chipped in one.

The Lumber Kings incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. The Bears incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
