Ottawa beats Smiths Falls 3-2 after comeback scare

The Smiths Falls Bears tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Ottawa Senators held on for a 3-2 victory.

Ottawa took a 3-1 lead during the second period, only to have Smiths Falls storm back on a Josh Leblanc goal 10:48 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Bears' power play was ineffective against the Senators' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Ottawa was helped by Daniel Sarracco, who registered one goal. Sarracco scored on the power play 19:56 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Ottawa. The Senators had gotten the advantage when Smiths Falls' Chase Hawley was sent off for interference. Sean Rappleyea assisted on the tally. Ottawa also got points from Rappleyea, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Bruno Cheff also scored for Ottawa. In addition, Ottawa received assists from Brendan Valko, who had two and Joey Champigny, Ryan Cranford, and Cody Bean, who each chipped in one.

Smiths Falls additionally got points from Chris MacMillan, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Smiths Falls were Kevin Groulx and Karson McCartney, who contributed one each.

Ottawa's Alexandre Savard-Belanger stopped 21 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Senators incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Bears' starting goalie, Cole Skinner, made 10 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Michael Pinios, who stopped four shots. Smiths Falls incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
