Carleton Place wins tough contest against Smiths Falls, 5-3

The Carleton Place Canadians gutted out a close 5-3 win against the Smiths Falls Bears.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Wesley Baker secured the win for Carleton Place with a goal in the third period.

Bryce VanHorn had a great game for the Canadians, netting two goals. VanHorn's tallies came on the power play at 15:41 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Smiths Falls and 2:56 into the third to make the score 3-3.

Smiths Falls' power play was ineffective against Carleton Place's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Carleton Place additionally got points from Jordan Larson, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Connor Merkley also scored for Carleton Place. In addition, Carleton Place received assists from Stephen Baylis, who had two and AJ Klein, Adam Lloyd, Andy Sturtz, Craig Pefley, and Trent Shore, who contributed one each.

The Bears were helped by Cole Busschaert, who registered one goal. Busschaert scored 11:03 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Smiths Falls. Neil Doef provided the assist. Others who scored for Smiths Falls included Brandon Lesway and Nicolas Coates, who each put in one. More assists for Smiths Falls came via Kevin Groulx, Chris MacMillan, and Sebastien Barrette, who each chipped in one.

Adrian Clark made 15 saves for the Canadians on 18 shots. Carleton Place incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Cole Skinner recorded 24 saves for Smiths Falls. The Bears incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Smiths Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Darius Gibson was ejected from the game.
