Clarington beats Port Perry 5-3 after comeback scare

The Port Perry Mojacks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Clarington Eagles would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-3.

A goal by Cody Kean put Clarington up 5-2 in the third period, but Port Perry pulled to within two on Kyle Schweda's tally 19:05 into the third period.

The Eagles' penalty kill excelled, as Clarington gave up one goal despite allowing 12 power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 6:53 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Eagles forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 12 minors and two majors for 54 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Clarington had been spending in the box.

The Eagles were helped by Braden Gray, who finished with one goal. Gray scored 10:05 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Clarington. Clarington additionally got points from Brent Hambly, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Kean, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Clarington included Jarod Hollister and Brodie Myers, who scored one goal each. In addition, Clarington received assists from Jake Carter, Mackenzie Morissette, and Brad Down, who each chipped in one.

The Mojacks' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. Port Perry surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Mojacks forced Clarington goalie Tyler Caruana to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots.

Port Perry was helped by Lucas Clark, who tallied one goal. Clark scored 6:22 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Port Perry. Schweda assisted on the tally. Port Perry also got points from Schweda, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Evan Wasylyk also scored for Port Perry. More assists for Port Perry came via Graham Lamers and Jeff St. Pierre, who contributed one each.

The Eagles' Caruana stopped 37 shots out of the 40 that he faced. Clarington registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Team's Kean and Ben Grieve were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Blake Shaw rejected 23 shots on goal for the Mojacks. For Port Perry, Owen Bateman was ejected from the game.
